Albatross (
Appearance
Albatross had blond, unkempt hair tied in a short braid. He wore a sleeveless hooded leather jacket over his long sleeve shirt and ragged pants with black military boots. In addition, he donned rimless, tinted, oval-shaped glasses and small hoop earrings on both of his ears.
Personality
Albatross was talkative and had a very outgoing personality that his presence was said to be easily detected in the midst of battle by merely following his voice and laughter. Nonetheless, he was very efficient and fast when completing missions. He was also quite competent, having been assigned to control the Mafia's vehicles and, by extension, was capable of shutting down anyone else's cash flow in their business if he wanted to.
Skills
- Physical Prowess: Albatross was quite dexterous with handling weapons, such as a kukri machete and possibly guns. He also had quick reaction time and speed, able to match the other Flags' swift movements in battle and hold his own against Adam Frankenstein to a fault.
- Driving Aptitude: Formerly the Mafia's wheelman, Albatross was capable of piloting anything with a steering wheel, including cars and boats, with higher speed and precision than anyone. He was also rumored to have once gotten away from the coast guard's high-speed attack helicopter using an old, beat-up fishing boat.
Background
Albatross once served as the organization's wheelman who piloted various types of vehicles. At some point, he was assigned by the Mafia to an apartment residence in a high-end building, where Chūya Nakahara would later live one floor below him.
King of Assassins Incident
Together with Piano Man, Doc, Lippmann, and Iceman, Albatross congratulated Chūya on his first-year anniversary in joining the Mafia. For their gift, they gave Chūya a photograph of him in his childhood. Albatross also gave him various other files after claiming to have threatened and begged record keepers of medical corporations for them. During their celebration, the Flags played billiards in their usual place. When they found Adam who had sneaked upon them, Albatross instantly threw his kukri knife to slice his head, though the latter dodged it.
The Flags engaged with Adam, suspecting that he is an ability user and may infiltrate the Mafia facility, more so after learning that he was a detective. However, this misconception was soon relieved once Adam revealed that his mission was to protect Chūya and arrest an assassin named Paul Verlaine. Chūya and Adam played billiards afterwards with the Flags, where Albatross himself became impressed with how skillful Adam was. Soon after, Adam grabbed Chūya away from the place to show the proof that Verlaine was alive, leaving the Flags behind.
During Chūya's absence, Albatross and the other Flags were "summoned" by the boss, Ōgai Mori, but they were actually ambushed by Verlaine. Chūya returned soon after, where he found Albatross breathing his last with his abdomen torn open and rib cage exposed while clutching Doc, believing to have saved the latter. Before dying, Albatross entrusted Chūya with his prized motorcycle in his garage.
Legacy
A funeral was held for Albatross and the other Flags the following day after their deaths. He would later appear in a trance-like vision to Chūya, assuring him that he and the Flags do not hate him even if they died because of Chūya and "how unique" he was. Additionally, Albatross and the Flags were buried in a well-kept graveyard near the mountains, which Chūya frequently visited after the King of Assassins Incident.[1]
Quotes
- (To Chūya Nakahara) "Whoa there. Sorry, but you wouldn't be able to kill me. I'd slice off your hand with this here blade before you'd even manage to land a hit."[1]
- (To Adam Frankenstein) "Ha-ha-ha! This is fun! You must really have a death wish, coming in here without even knocking! Lemme grant that wish for ya!"[1]
- (Last words to Chūya Nakahara) "Chūya… There's a motorcycle in the garage. I used it for work. It's my prized possession… Feel free…to use it…"[1]
- (As a vision to Chūya Nakahara) "We all died 'cause of how unique you are. But we don't hate ya for it."[1]
Etymology
The nickname Albatross is based off Phoebastria albatrus. When written in kanji, his name means "stupid" (阿呆, ahō?) and "bird" (鳥, tori?), though the entire word refers to "albatross" (阿呆鳥, ahōdori?), specifically the short-tailed albatross.[3][4]
