In The Small Room, Part 1, Section 2 (
Synopsis[]
Having successfully dealt with Dostoyevsky, there's nothing left standing in Dazai and Sigma's way…but will their escape from Meursault really go so smoothly?[1]
Summary[]
Sigma doubts Dazai's claim that superhumans do not exist, thinking that Dazai himself is a superhuman, and questions his real motive for choosing him over the other tools for his escape. Dazai reasons firstly that Sigma is Kunikida's replacement who can get surprised at his antics, a reason Sigma rejects and makes him think that he is unworthy enough to know the truth. However, Dazai replies that he chose Sigma for him to use his ability to extract the future plans of Fyodor, now supposedly dead from drowning, in order to save the Agency at the airport. At such thought, Sigma hears recollections of having been used in the past.
Dazai ushers Sigma to ride the elevator, before which Dazai ensures that no traps are in place in its internal mechanisms. Sigma asks Dazai for his second reason of choosing him; Dazai responds that Fyodor or Gogol would have silenced Sigma had he not chosen him. The latter comes under the belief that Dazai saved his life, though he remains adamant whether Dazai is telling the truth. Sigma then turns conflicted about Dazai's and the Agency's relationship: though he thinks that Dazai is like others who manipulated him, Sigma perceives that Dazai does not utilize the Agency, nor does the Agency take advantage of Dazai.
Dazai soon grows suspicious at the lengthy duration of their ride. The two suddenly hear the time-stopping ability user through the PA system that she was merely asked to stop time and begs to spare her life. Having escaped the flooding, Fyodor and Chūya corner the ability user, and Fyodor kills her by shooting her point-blank. Addressing Dazai, Fyodor voices out his shock at the shallowness of the seven-year bond he had with Chūya for thinking that his gravity manipulation would not be able to stop a flood.
Fyodor turns out to have priorly made preparations using Chūya's ability to ensure their escape. Fyodor then mocks Dazai for being unfit in utilizing a gravity manipulator after overlooking something so simple. Sigma wonders how Fyodor anticipated getting flooded beforehand, though Dazai presumes that one of the guards have been turned into a vampire under his bidding and, once unable to contact them any further, Fyodor came to know of the command center being overtaken. Sigma then realizes that Fyodor must have seized control over Meursault even before Dazai did. To grant the same trial they put him in, Fyodor initiates a shutdown sequence and floods Dazai and Sigma inside the elevator.
