Land of Inhuman Demons (Part 2) (人外魔境(其の二), Jingai Makyō (Sono Ni)?) is the 59th episode of Bungo Stray Dogs anime series and the ninth episode of the fifth season.

Synopsis[]

Fukuzawa and Fukuchi confront their shared past as time runs out for the Detective Agency.[1]

Summary[]

Akutagawa corners Bram and Aya

Akutagawa corners Bram and Aya.

With Kamui's directive for his vampires to find Bram's abductor, Akutagawa corners Bram and Aya. Kunikida and Tanizaki, informed that Aya has run off with the source of the vampire outbreak, stake out the airport looking for her but are swiftly subdued by Fukuchi. Atsushi finally awakens to find himself restrained and guarded by Teruko.

Fukuchi takes Ranpo as a captive

Fukuchi incapacitates Ranpo.

Fukuzawa and Ranpo meet Fukuchi in a trap rendezvous, where they find Kunikida and Tanizaki held by a lifeline as Fukuchi's hostages. Planning to transport Fukuchi to Poe's booklet, Ranpo is quickly incapacitated by Fukuchi as the third hostage. Fukuzawa then surmises that Fukuchi has a true goal beyond the destruction of the state. Fukuchi challenges Fukuzawa to name this goal within five minutes, or he will kill all the Agency hostages.

Atsushi freed by Teruko

Teruko removes Atsushi's restraints.

Teruko frees Atsushi from his restraints, confessing that she knows of the truth behind Fukuchi's scheme and has accepted it reluctantly but entirely. Until he completes it, Teruko tells Atsushi that they are to lie in wait. Atsushi persuades her to stop the terrorism with him, but she accosts and prevents him from doing so. In the end, Teruko decides to reveal the Decay of the Angel's true objective to him.

Fukuchi vs

Fukuchi and Fukuzawa clash.

As the clash between Fukuchi and Fukuzawa commences, Fukuzawa initially gains the upper hand thanks to his familiarity with Fukuchi's fighting habits, trumping even Amenogozen's space–time capabilities. However, Fukuchi soon turns the fight into his favor and injures Fukuzawa with his ability, claiming that he now does not know the current Fukuchi that he once knew.

Fukuchi and Fukuzawa heading their separate paths

Fukuzawa and Fukuchi separating paths in the past.

In a glimpse of their childhood, Fukuzawa and Fukuchi recognized each other as equals in combat. Thirteen years later, Fukuchi invited Fukuzawa to join him in the battlefield. With Fukuchi bent on saving his comrades from dying, Fukuzawa, however, professes to end the war, thus rejecting the invitation and sparking the end of their shared path. Fukuzawa later assassinated war hawks that ended the war, while Fukuchi survived the battlefield alone and became a demon of carnage. Meanwhile, Atsushi becomes crushed after learning the Decay's true objective.

Fukuchi stabs Fukuzawa

Fukuchi critically injures Fukuzawa, who guesses his true goal wrong.

Fukuchi spares Fukuzawa's life to make him witness his final act. He contacts the UN chairman, now aware of Fukuchi's motives, to unlock One Order in five minutes if he does not wish to have the vampires launch a simultaneous global attack. Fukuzawa guesses that Fukuchi's goal is revenge on the upper echelons who let the war brutally rage on in the past and ultimately on him for betraying him. However, Fukuchi stabs him with this incorrect answer.

Atsushi learns the Decay of the Angel's true goal

Atsushi learns the Decay of the Angel's true goal.

Atsushi grapples with the gravity of Teruko's revelation, burdened with indecision with visions of his peers' varying advices for him. Among these peers, however, arrive Akutagawa and Dazai who point him to head outside and take action. In Meursault, Sigma remains confused why Dazai chose him when he was able to defeat Fyodor on his own. Dazai tells him that he has two reasons, one being a stand-in for Kunikida as someone who can become amused at his gimmicks, much to Sigma's annoyance.

Sigma fails to win against Dazai.

As Sigma realizes that he himself is not worth explaining to, Dazai assures him that he only thinks he would not understand his explanation. Dazai also confirms if Sigma can use his ability on a corpse like Fyodor in order to learn his future plans to aid the Agency. Shocked at Dazai's resolve to help the Agency, Sigma is haunted by memories of people discarding him for exhausting his usefulness.

Fyodor outmaneuvers Dazai's flooding strategy

Fyodor survives the flooding.

Dazai and Sigma head to an elevator, which Dazai assesses and finds no traps in. Sigma asks Dazai his second reason for choosing him, which is to have prevented Fyodor from silencing him otherwise. Sigma ponders about Dazai's and the Agency's relationship of not using each other unlike his own understanding of organizations and their members. Dazai then dubiously notes that their ride is taking too long, only to be met by an interruption.

To their surprise, Fyodor and Chūya capture Dazai's time-stopping ability user accomplice, whom Fyodor shoots to death. Fyodor chides Dazai for his shallow bond with Chūya following their easy escape from the flooding that he owes to Dazai's lapse. To grant them the same trial given to him, Fyodor initiates a flooding inside Dazai's and Sigma's elevator.
