"This isn't a present. This is a flag. Ever since the days of ancient Rome, there has only been one reason to raise a flag: to tell people, 'We are here, and we are the chosen ones.' If any one of the six of us is ever in trouble, you remember that flag and gather under it. We're counting on you." |
The Flags (
Description[]
The Flags were a group of young mafiosi aged 25 years old and below who held relatively high ranks within the Mafia. The group originally didn't have a name until Piano Man decided to call them the "Flags", borrowing from the metaphor of a flag being used in Ancient Rome as a beacon to announce its bearer's presence, which only he and Lippmann remembered. Founded and led by Piano Man, its members included Lippmann, Albatross, Doc, Iceman, and Chūya Nakahara. Each member had his own responsibility in the Mafia:
- Piano Man: A craftsman of supernotes or counterfeit money. He was also the closest to the position of being a Mafia executive.
- Albatross: In charge of the transportation aspect in the Mafia.
- Doc: A doctor and the Mafia's medical supervisor.
- Lippmann: In charge of public relations, including negotiating deals with enterprises or having meetings with the government.
- Iceman: A hit man.
- Chūya Nakahara: In charge of the gemstone black market.
Background[]
After Chūya was invited and joined the Flags, Mafia boss Ōgai Mori assigned Piano Man to look after him in case he would come to know about the secrets of his existence encoded in confidential Mafia files that could only be accessed by executives. Piano Man and the rest of the Flags, however, found no issue in keeping said secret from Chūya and gave him various documents related to his past on his first-year Mafia anniversary.
At the onset of the King of Assassins Incident, assassin Paul Verlaine ambushed the Flags sans Chūya in their usual gathering place and massacred all five of them. A funeral was held the day after. It took a mortician eight whole hours to make their maimed corpses look presentable, and over a hundred people were in attendance at their funeral, including a few relatives. They were buried in a well-kept graveyard near the mountains, which Chūya frequently visited.[1]
