"I'm in. In the end, hurting others is the only way we can save people."

— Tanizaki joining the agency's fight against the Port Mafia during the cannibalism.[1]

Jun'ichirō Tanizaki ( (たに) (ざき) (じゅん) (いち) (ろう), Tanizaki Jun'ichirō?) was a member of the Armed Detective Agency who owned the ability named Light Snow and was the adoptive older brother of Naomi Tanizaki[4].

Appearance

Tanizaki had a slim, average build with orange hair, hazel eyes and pale skin. His hair was parted in the middle with its spikes sweeping downwards, along with a light grey bobby pin clipped on his left. He wore earrings with the corresponding color of his pin.

His attire consisted of an oversized, off-white V-necked sweater with a black stripe on the collar, light blue pants, and brown shoes. A red sweater was wrapped around his waist. Tanizaki also donned a black tank top underneath his sweater.[note 1]

After the cannibalism, Tanizaki wore a formal suit during the agency's celebration.[5]

When the Armed Detective Agency was framed as terrorists, he suddenly wore a white hood suit[6] and changed into a riot gear with black boots and black gloves, originally belonging to the military police.[7]

Personality

Tanizaki apologizes

Tanizaki sincerely apologizes to Atsushi.

Tanizaki was arguably one of the most "average" members of the Agency, not being eccentric or loud like any of the other members. However, he did go along with their shenanigans, especially when specifically instructed by his senior members like Doppo Kunikida.[8] He once hinted on feeling quite mediocre as a detective with an ability "not too useful for battle", albeit afterwards assuring the newcomer Atsushi Nakajima that he was able to last quite long in their rather dangerous line of work. He also never hesitates to apologize for his behavior when necessary, specifically when he apologized to Atsushi for his rude character in his entrance exam, even when that was what was expected of him for his role.[9]

Tanizaki acting as a bomber with a vendetta on the Agency.

Tanizaki also has an aptitude to adapt to his surroundings, which was usually complemented by his illusory ability. As such, he was one of the agents sent in for reconnaissance missions.[10][2] Moreover, Tanizaki appeared to make a convincing actor, such as being a bomber[11] even if he and Kunikida originally did not plan him to take on such role.[8]

Atsushi's and Tanizaki's nervousness (manga)

Tanizaki's nervousness in piloting the Night Crow.

Nevertheless, he had the occasional tendency to get nervous. He admitted being quite nervous whenever he goes to the library that serves as one of the Ministry of Home Affairs' secret bases, as well as when he anxiously flew a plane by himself and was referred to as the "wimpiest in the east" (探偵社・ (ひがし)のへたれ, tantei-sha: higashi no hetare?) as complemented to Atsushi being "wimpiest in the west".[2]

Tanizaki about to kill Mori

Tanizaki's willingness to kill an afflicted Mori to save Fukuzawa in return.

However, he cared deeply for the well-being of his fellow Agency members, but he had a very fragile sense of morality, in which he quickly takes the path that is most likely to preserve himself and the Agency, even if it includes highly immoral behavior, including harming civilians,[12] aiming to kill his enemies,[9][12][1] and planning on joining the Mafia.[13] Such impulsive actions risk endangering even his own colleagues, the Agency's reputation, and Yokohama as a whole, making Tanizaki one of the more dangerous members of the Agency in terms of liability.

Tanizaki threatens the Black Lizard

Tanizaki threatens the Black Lizard not to lay a finger on Naomi.

Despite being the humble and somewhat carefree type, Tanizaki would get extremely violent and bloodthirsty towards those who hurt his sister Naomi. He tended to get embarrassed by his sister's constant antics and physical intimacy,[11][9][14][15] but he nonetheless cared deeply for her. He even stated that things such as morality, ego, and pride do not matter to him compared to Naomi and would gladly burn the world for her.[12] Even against the Mafia's Black Lizard commanders, Tanizaki did not waver in displaying his murderous intent and threatened to kill them should they ever lay a finger on Naomi.[1]

Ability

Main article: Light Snow

His ability, Light Snow ( (ささめ) (ゆき), Sasame Yuki?), allowed him to project illusions in a certain range of area around him, covering the affected area with snowfall.

Skills

  • Cooking Skills: Tanizaki was fairly good at cooking. He can cook some dishes including Hayashi rice.[15]

Background

Tanizaki lives alone with his younger sister Naomi. Nothing has been revealed about their past yet or what has happened to their parents, except that he was a student before joining the Agency.[9] His Agency entrance exam was apparently noted to be quite harsh and severe[2] to the point that Tanizaki has buried his memories of that day in his subconscious and that remembering it might only bring out underlying trauma.[8]

Writing mainly on obssession, passion, and how society changed over time, Tanizaki won the Asahi Prize in 1949 for his accomplishments. The ability "Light Snow" comes from a novel of the same name (translated into English as The Makioka Sisters) about the decline of an upper-middle class family leading up to World War II. Naomi, another novel, is about a man's obsession to groom a girl named Naomi into a Westernized woman.[16]

Trivia

  • The unit number of the Tanizaki siblings' residence is 203. A pun on the word brother (兄さん, nii-san?) as 2 (?) can be read as ni and 3 (?) can be read as san.[15]

Notes

  1. In the anime, Tanizaki doesn't have a blank top underneath his sweater.
