Jun'ichirō Tanizaki vs. Ryūrō Hirotsu, Gin Akutagawa, and Michizō Tachihara is a skirmish fought between Armed Detective Agency member Jun'ichirō Tanizaki and the Port Mafia's Black Lizard commanders Ryūrō Hirotsu, Gin Akutagawa, and Michizō Tachihara.
It happened in the Mafia's headquarters in the early stage of the Cannibalism strategy, during which Tanizaki stays behind to negotiate with the Mafia, while the others attempt to catch the virus ability user.
Prologue[]
After the Agency brings Yukichi Fukuzawa out of the hospital surrounded by the Mafia, Ranpo Edogawa lets Tanizaki stay behind in the Mafia to bargain with them. However, after Doppo Kunikida and Atsushi Nakajima manage to restrain a fake Pushkin rather than the actual one, the Black Lizard commanders looking after Tanizaki realize the failure of the Agency's virus containment plan.
Despite Tanizaki insisting that Ranpo has not delivered any messages as he deems fit, Hirotsu tries to recruit Tanizaki into becoming a Mafia spy, threatening to have his sister's life on the line if he does not comply with their demands. Tanizaki instantly turns sinister upon hearing their threat on Naomi; at gunpoint, Tachihara claims that Tanizaki cannot dodge bullets with his illusion ability. An unfazed Tanizaki corrects him that he will miss all his shots at him no matter how many times he fires.
Battle[]
Tanizaki slips out a strip of page from Kunikida's notebook, who remotely materializes a switchblade that Tanizaki uses to cut his restraints. Tachihara instinctively shoots, albeit only hitting Tanizaki's projections of himself. The latter also projects multiple clone illusions, all of which Tachihara hits.
Hirotsu stops Tachihara from firing his pistols to avoid hitting anyone among them after noticing that their positions have also been altered. Tachihara becomes angered that they should have patted Tanizaki earlier, while Hirotsu realizes that they may have used an ability through the piece of paper sewn on his sleeve. Gin notices the ajar door close, so the three anticipate for any attack and even being killed inside the chamber.
Tanizaki immediately reappears and sneaks to attack Gin from behind, but she quickly evades his attack. Hirotsu blasts him away with Falling Camellia, but they realize that the one he attacked is a mere projection that eventually dissipates. Having been locked in, Hirotsu then surmises that Tanizaki – with his ability quite suitable for assassinations – might not be aiming to kill the three of them but most likely Ōgai Mori while incapacitated in the headquarters' top floor.
Aftermath[]
After Tanizaki escapes from the Black Lizard, Mafia operatives are called in to fortify the top floor entrance. However, Tanizaki has managed to sneak in the floor by then, allowing him to successfully infiltrate Mori's room and prepare to kill the Mafia boss to end the feud.[1]
Manga and Anime Differences[]
In the manga, Tanizaki tries to attack Gin from behind, while he appears and attacks her frontward in the anime, aiming for her neck with his switchblade. The manga also depicts Tanizaki's projection bleeding after receiving Hirotsu's blast, while he does not experience such consequence in the anime.
Moreover, Tanizaki originally closes the door before the skirmish to give the impression of his intent in killing the three Black Lizard commanders inside the room as Hirotsu has deduced. However, while invisible, Tanizaki closes it in the anime only after the skirmish, which Tachihara approaches and confirms to have locked them in.
In the aftermath, a minor difference shows Tanizaki wearing his red jacket while sneaking to Mori's room in the anime,[2] unlike in the manga where he keeps it tied around his waist like usual.
