Introduction |
"We use anything we can for our purpose, whether it be an ability user or a man hiding behind the witness protection program." |
Jun Mitamura (
Appearance
Mitamura appeared young and wore a city police uniform, equipped with a standard-issue black revolver.[1]
In the anime, he had amber eyes and dark hair swept outwards with short fringes that framed his face and partially covered ears. He dressed in the standard police uniform which consisted of a light blue buttoned shirt beneath a black bulletproof vest, a pair of navy slacks, and a police cap. He also kept on his person his standard-issue revolver and a small notepad.
Mitamura also disguised himself while abducting Sōseki Natsume, wearing a light green jacket, matching-colored pants, blue sneakers, and a light green cap in place of his police cap.[3]
Personality
Initially, Mitamura acted brightly and amiably, visibly showing fascination, intrigue, and later pride about Ranpo Edogawa being a gifted detective who could help the police in their endeavors. This was, however, seemingly part of his charismatic charade as an operative for V. Nevertheless, even when found out by Ranpo as a member of V, Mitamura retained his well-mannered demeanor towards the boy.
Mitamura was quite loyal to V and their objective of ridding the country of fellow ability users. Among V, he claimed to be considerably one of the negotiators compared to the others who would resort to violence during interrogations. As such, Mitamura was patient to a fault and knew better to hold back his emotions, snapping in anger only when provoked.
Ability
As a member of V, an organization that consisted of ability users, it is highly possible, albeit never confirmed, that Mitamura was also an ability user.
Skills
- Intelligence: Mitamura was elusive and resourceful to a degree, as he was able to abduct Natsume using a theater rug and organic solvent while taking advantage of the theater's panic-stricken chaos at the time. Furthermore, he was able to operate as a member of the syndicate V while simultaneously serving as a uniformed police officer.
- Marksmanship: Though his marksmanship skills were not shown, Mitamura was possibly knowledgeable with using a firearm, particularly his city police-issued revolver.
Background
At an unknown point in time, Mitamura began serving as a city police officer and operating underground for V.
Untold Origins Arc
Some time after the war, an incident broke out in Theatrum Mundi following an ambiguous message signed by "V", where lead actor Tokio Murakami was pierced onstage and killed. Presumably during the second half of the play, Mitamura disguised himself and abducted Natsume using a theater rug and organic solvent, then tied him up backstage. Later, during the investigation of Murakami's death, Mitamura reported to hired bodyguard Yukichi Fukuzawa that a gentleman was found missing among the crowd, spiking Fukuzawa's suspicion.
However, not long after, Ranpo solved the case, denouncing Murakami as the mastermind of the incident by faking his death and that the gentleman was actually a kidnap victim who was tied backstage. After the incident, Murakami congratulated Fukuzawa and Ranpo for cracking the case, turning shocked but cordially grateful for Ranpo being a gifted detective. He then accompanied and drove Ranpo to the station.
During the ride, Mitamura showered Ranpo with compliments regarding his ability, but Ranpo saw through his act and deduced that the officer did not believe it. He then offered to prove his ability to Mitamura, correctly deducing that they were not heading to the station and that he abducted the gentleman backstage. Dropping his jovial demeanor, Mitamura revealed that they were to head to a more "fitting place" to welcome the young detective.
Mitamura brought Ranpo to one of V's shell companies, where he enjoined Ranpo to work with V after ruining their entire plot, but Ranpo showed his uninterest. After repeated persuasion, Ranpo reiterated his indifference to their cause and mocked Mitamura's ramblings, provoking the latter to point his gun at Ranpo. Before he could shoot the detective, Ranpo counted down to five seconds until Fukuzawa crashed inside. Mitamura grew paralyzed at the bodyguard's bloodlust, easily getting incapacitated with Fukuzawa's shoulder throw and almost immediately losing consciousness.
After the entire incident, Mitamura was detained, but he was later found dead in police custody as if stabbed by an invisible force.[1]

Quotes
- (To Yukichi Fukuzawa and Ranpo Edogawa) "Good work, you two! That was beautiful; got me right here! When Watchdog here was checking the scene of the crime, I knew he was going to be able to solve this complicated case…but wow! I had no idea he was armed with a secret weapon! Mighty fine work, Detective!"[1]
- (To Ranpo Edogawa about V) "We are men with ambition. Our only wish is to cleanse this country of evil, and we would love to have a talented ability user such as yourself. What do you say?"[1]
- (To Ranpo Edogawa) "I am trying…to treat you like an adult. My job at the theater was to make sure the plan went smoothly and to deal with the aftermath. If you’re out of the picture, then nobody will ever know what really happened. And yet, here I am opening up to you, telling you the truth, and trying to negotiate with you like a grown man. I am doing all of this in good faith."[1]
- (To Ranpo Edogawa) "Then let me be honest with you. It pisses me off that a brat like you ruined our plan, and your arrogance gets on my nerves. So your ability lets you see the truth? So what? A pathetic ability like that wouldn't even be able to stop a single bullet. […] But even then, I tried to be nice to you for the sake of our supreme purpose—to rid this country of the scum that plagues it—those who bring chaos—the parasites that eat away at the framework of the nation—in other words, the ability users."[1]
