Background[]

Ihatov's ten-year orchard

Kenji with his fellow villagers.

Since his childhood, Kenji lived in Ihatovo, a rural farming village presumably in the Tōhoku region. The village once had a ten-year orchard, which was eventually destroyed in a storm overnight. Soon, they merely decided to plant seedlings and start anew.[1]

Later on, a 50-year landslide occurred in area, but Kenji, using his ability, barehandedly crumbled the foot of a mountain to divert the flow of the flood away. Though this left the village almost unharmed, his best friend died in the flood, something Kenji claimed to have no memory of.

Fukuzawa meets Kenji

Kenji found by Fukuzawa.

After the flood, Yukichi Fukuzawa paid a visit to investigate about the village spared from the disaster, subsequently learning what Kenji had done.[2] Presumably, Fukuzawa soon scouted Kenji to work for the Armed Detective Agency in Yokohama.

Plot[]

Port Mafia Arc[]

Kenji's first appearance

Kenji's first appearance.

Kunikida had called Kenji and some other members to come to a warehouse, where Dazai said a man-eating tiger will appear. As they came, Dazai had already defeated the tiger and explained it was Atsushi and the tiger transformation was his ability. Kenji wonders what they will do with Atsushi and Dazai explains he wants him to join their agency.[3]

Tachihara and Gin defeated by Kenji

Kenji defeats Tachihara and Gin.

After some time during the Black Lizard attack on the agency, Kenji is present in the office, but the agency easily took down the attacks. Kenji wonders what they will do with them and Kunikida tells him to just threw them out of the window and Kenji proceeds to throw them out one by one.[4]

Following the fight between Atsushi and Akutagawa at the cargo ship, Kyōka Izumi is brought to the Agency office, and Naomi is among the members playing with her. Atsushi, worried that someone like Ranpo might not forgive her crimes, soon finds out that Ranpo himself enjoys playing with her the most, even buying her some snacks.

The Agency is then given a case to investigate a car explosion. After the police leave the office, Kenji states that city polices sure are busy since they leave without having tea. Kunikida then asks Kenji if the police from his home have free time. Kenji then replies that everyone knows each other in his village. The policeman's job was to only fix a pump well, rescuing cats from chimneys, and tasting the first year's watermelon. Kunikida then asks what if someone commits a crime to which Kenji replies that the perpetrator will be tied up and thrown into a cliff. He then also states that he does not really understand the concept of money. Kunikida then offers Atsushi to investigate the case.

Kenji gathers information about the car explosion

Kenji gathers information about the car explosion

Kenji accompanies Atsushi to investigate the case and goes to the Yokohamabashi Shopping District to gather information. Kenji encounters a man he knew and asks him if he knows anything about the car explosion. The man then replies that some folks bought a load of fertilizer and Kenji concludes that it must be nitrogen fertilizer used to make bombs.

Kenji and Atsushi then decide to go to the place of the gang in question and asks them if they are responsible for the bomb explosion. Hearing this, Atsushi then tells Kenji that even though they may be the ones who did the explosion, he doubts that they will admit to it. Kenji then replies that if they are sincere with their inquiries, they will respond.

After arriving at the place, Kenji then asks the folks if they are the ones responsible for the bomb explosion, however they reply that they do not know anything about it. Hearing their reply, Kenji then thanks them and proceeds to leave. After leaving the place, Atsushi exclaims that they are obviously the ones that cause the explosion however Kenji says that he never fails to communicate with others. Kenji then initiates to go eat first before going back to the office.

Kenji attacks the gang members

Kanji attacks the gang members.

While heading back to the office, they were blocked by the gang members they asked before and tells them that they might have found a proof since they left early. Kenji then thanks them for telling the truth and tells Atsushi that everyone in his case confesses like that. He was then attacked by a gang member by a pipe causing him to fall. However, he gets back up easily and attacks the gang members. Kenji soon defeats all of the gang single-handedly using his ability. He and Atsushi then eat at a restaurant; after getting full, Kenji takes a nap.[5]

The Guild Arc[]

Lucy compliments Kenji's hat

Lucy compliments Kenji's hat.

The Guild leader Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald and his two subordinates arrive at the Agency office. He wishes to buy the Agency to acquire their skilled business permit, but Fukuzawa refuses his offer. As Kenji soon escorts the three visitors out the building, Lucy compliments his hat, after which he vanishes inside the elevator.

The next morning, Lucy traps Atsushi, Jun'ichirō Tanizaki, and other civilians to her dimension. She also shows Kenji and Naomi Tanizaki imprisoned in her secret room, who can only be freed if they defeat the gigantic creature, Anne.[6] When Atsushi and Tanizaki later defeat Lucy, Kenji and the other prisoners are released after Lucy deactivates her ability and lifts the dimension.[7]

Later, Kyōka is given a mission by the Agency, during which mafia executive Kōyō Ozaki arrives to eliminate Atsushi and retrieve Kyōka. Kenji and Kunikida later arrive to flush out the mafia reinforcements, revealing that they have been notified through Kyōka's phone after it rang. As the Agency gets in a standoff with the mafia, two Guild members arrive along with four more other members. In the end, the Guild members overwhelm all the forces, including Kenji and his subordinates.[8]

Armed Detective Agency members at the Bankoudou Hall

The Agency convenes at the Bankoudou Hall.

After Akiko Yosano heals Kunikida and Atsushi, Kenji takes a nap at the Agency office. The Agency later convenes at the Bankoudou Hall, where Dazai explains their strategy against the mafia and the Guild. To make up for their numbers, they shall split into various teams: one defense team and two offense teams. Kenji, Fukuzawa, Ranpo, and Yosano comprise the defense team; Tanizaki is partnered with Kunikida as one offense team; and Dazai is paired with Atsushi as another offense team. Dazai then finishes with their main objective which is to keep their base hidden as possible, after which Fukuzawa declares that they must survive the three-way ability war.[9]

Mori eventually sends Chūya Nakahara to the Agency's base to deliver a message. After Chūya effortlessly obliterates their remotely-activated equipment, Kenji and Yosano are personally sent to meet with the mafioso. With the detectives having figured out his reason for his visit, Chūya discloses that the mafia has laid a bait for the Guild, particularly for Steinbeck and Lovecraft, and coaxes them to grab the opportunity of a perfect ambush on the Guild.

Kenji tries to attack Chuya

Kenji prepares to attack Chūya.

Yosano admits it to be quite an enticing offer, though she and Kenji propose they settle the issue with Chūya right there and then through battle. Kenji launches the first offensive, dismantling a train track railing which he hurls towards the mafioso. Chūya manages to evade the attack and kicks Kenji away, upon which Yosano sneaks behind him for a quick attack. Chūya then activates his ability to stand on the ceiling, much to Kenji's amusement. Fukuzawa later interrupts their clash and inquires about the offer, where they soon find out that the mafia has used their Agency clerks as the bait.[10]

After Atsushi gets abducted by the Guild, Kenji and the other Agency members restrain Kunikida who gets cursed along with most of Yokohama's citizens. Soon after, Kunikida informs them that the curse has begun.[11]

Armed Detective Agency welcoming Kyoka

The Agency welcomes Kyōka as their newest official member.

Later, Kenji is among the other Agency members who proudly witness Kyōka pass her entrance exam.[12] Eventually, Kenji and the other Agency members welcome Kyōka as their newest member. When Edgar Allan Poe visits the Agency office, Kenji receives him and asks if he likes to have some drinks while waiting for Ranpo. Poe mutters to himself, upon which Kenji remarks that he cannot hear him amidst the noise. In the end, Poe tells Kenji that he does not need anything.[13]

The Guild Aftermath Arc[]

Agency members arrive at Zoopark's hideout

Kenji and the others confront Zoopark's leader.

Following the battle with the Guild, Kenji and the other drained Agency members are updated by Atsushi about criminal organizations eyeing the Guild's alleged fortune. The next day, he and the others locate a gang that ransacked Café Uzumaki; Kenji easily rips out their supposedly secure door and confronts the gang with the other members. As they return to the café, they are introduced to Lucy, the café's new waitress.[14]

Some time later, Kenji asks for the Agency's second-in-command, whom Tanizaki thinks to be Ranpo (though he rejects such title) or Dazai (who is occupied on thinking how to disrupt Kunikida's schedule). At the end of the day, Kenji and Tanizaki learn from Dazai that the Agency's next president is Kunikida.[15]

Cannibalism Arc[]

Agency members protecting Fukuzawa

The Agency's main forces blockade Fukuzawa's room.

As Fukuzawa is attacked by a masked assassin, Kenji and the others rush to the President's side, where they find him get afflicted with a virus that even Yosano cannot accurately diagnose nor treat.[16] As the mafia arrives at the hospital where the President is taken, Ranpo encourages them, especially asking Kunikida as their interim director to issue his comrades with his orders. As such, Kenji and the rest of the Agency simultaneously guard Fukuzawa's room.

As they face off with the mafia's main forces led by Chūya, Kenji and the others begin to dissipate, revealing it as Tanizaki's illusion. In truth, Kenji had blasted through the wall and carried the President out to safety with the others, rethinking their strategy in their escape.[17]

Kenji and the others soon fetch Kyōka and Tanizaki after escaping from the mafia. Despite their new order from Fukuzawa himself not to fight the mafia, Ranpo persuades them that it is inevitable to fight them after they tried and failed to catch the virus ability user. As such, Kenji and most of the Agency members, except Kunikida and Atsushi, agree to launch a frontal assault at the mafia.[18]

Kenji protects himself from the gunshots

Kenji defends himself from the mafia.

Tanizaki, Yosano, and Kenji head to the mafia headquarters and charge at the mafiosi, managing to break through the first floor of the building. Eventually, a barrage of gunshots rain upon them, forcing them to go on the defense. When the attacks stop, Kenji and the others soon notice Motojirō Kajii walking up to them; to their surprise, the mafioso launches his so-called Lemon Runway, paving the path he walks with lemon bombs. Yosano then calls Kenji and Tanizaki to retreat.[19]

Tanizaki and Kenji monitoring the outside of enemy's hideout

Kenji and Tanizaki monitor the coal mine from above.

In their search for Fyodor, Kenji and Tanizaki monitor the exits from above the Rats' hideout. Kenji contacts Dazai about the activities happening, such as a horde of vehicles exiting the coal mine. Dazai asks them to ignore it, including the subsequent ones they see. Though Tanizaki panics upon why Dazai does not give the order, Dazai quips that they must not waste their manpower in capturing a demon. Tanizaki soon tells Dazai about a chopper near the site, while Kenji tells them of a lone man on the ground casually walking. Dazai gives the order to capture the lone man; to their dismay, their caught target is not Fyodor.[20]

Tanizaki, Kyoka, and Kenji after the cannibalism

Kenji with Tanizaki and Kyōka at the banquet.

Eventually, Kenji, the Agency, and the mafia confront Pushkin altogether at the end of the coal mine, leading the Russian to deactivate the virus. In the aftermath, Kenji and the Agency hold a banquet at a luxury liner given to them by Fitzgerald. Tanizaki worries about their punishment for disobeying the President, though Kenji and Kyōka are quite indifferent and rather thrilled given how he describes their situation. They then approach Ranpo after escaping Poe's novel, to which he tells them about their punishment.[21]

In the anime, Kenji and the others apologize to Fukuzawa. Kunikida speaks on their behalf, willing to accept their punishment for disobeying the President's order not to fight the mafia. Nonetheless, the President smiles at them and is grateful for their efforts.[22]

Hunting Dogs Arc[]

A month after the events of Cannibalism, the Agency is conferred the Shikyuu Award for their services in helping preserve the peace and order of Yokohama. Soon enough, Kenji and the others are briefed by Kunikida on a "murder association" known as the Decay of the Angel responsible for four gruesome murders of government officials, which allude to the five signs that indicate the imminent death of an "angel" in Buddhism. Fukuzawa orders them to prevent a fifth murder from happening, but Ranpo refuses to take the case and storms out of the office.[23]

Kenji stops the military police

Kenji prevents the military police from interfering the operation.

Nikolai Gogol contacts the Agency holding government officials hostage. As a test solely for them, he challenges them to save the hostages being tied to chainsaw chairs before they activate within 30 minutes or before any external parties interfere. Kunikida contacts Ranpo, who asks them to be careful of the situation, while he follows down a lead. They head to the hostage site, where Kunikida asks Kenji to stop the incoming military police from interfering their operation. Eventually, the Agency finds themselves identified by Justice Vice Minister Tonan as the Decay of the Angel and hunted by the military police.[24]

Kenji regroups with the others and blockades themselves from the military police. They are contacted by Ranpo, who warns them about the Book's power spurring the current events. He asks them to avoid capture at all costs despite their innocence, but their conversation is cut short as Ranpo jumps off a building to escape from the police at his end.

The military police fires sleeping gas at them, forcing them to commit suicide as the operatives barge in the room. To their surprise, Yosano resuscitates her four comrades using her ability to take out the police altogether. They soon change into the operatives' riot gear and escape from the building.[25]

Kenji motivates the Agency members

Kenji motivates his fellow members.

With enough distance covered from the hostage situation site, Kenji and the others take a respite in the woods. As each of them grasps their vulnerable situation, Kenji gives them some rice balls and encourages them to keep living, recounting a similar experience that occurred in his hometown about a ten-year-old orchard being swept away by a single storm overnight. Nonetheless, he tells them they started over once again, connecting it with their struggle that they must push through their storm to soon rebuild the Agency.

Motivated, Kunikida announces that they must first escape and lists two options: either they take the northern train or hijack a car down the southern road to outrun the military's rate of expansion. After deliberating, Kunikida suggests they go by car, so as not to affect other citizens on the train if the military were to catch up to them. They agree with him and set out southward.[1]

Jono blocks Kenji's punch

Kenji's punch blocked by Jōno.

Kunikida soon carjacks a theft-insured vehicle, driving to a secure location where they can hide and gather information. He soon hears three people at the backseat, where Tanizaki finds Saigiku Jōno seated between him and Kenji. The two try to overwhelm the Hunting Dog using Light Snow and Kenji's strength, only for them to get pulled out of the car and left behind.

When Tetchō Suehiro prepares to attack them, Kunikida runs him over with the car and retrieves Tanizaki and Kenji. They drive away from the Hunting Dogs, but Tetchō easily cleaves their vehicle in half from afar.[26] As Tetchō prepares to kill Yosano, Chūya arrives attacks the Hunting Dogs from a chopper with his ability.

Kenji stabbed by Tetcho

Kenji stabbed by Tetchō.

They are unusually relieved with the mafia rescuing them, but Chūya informs that the price is to exchange an Agency member to the mafia. They soon find Kenji stabbed with Tetchō's sword, who continues his pursuit. Kunikida tasks Tanizaki to find the true criminal, jumps off the chopper to land on Tetchō mid-air, and detonates a hand grenade on the two of them.[27]

They are then welcomed by Ōgai Mori to the mafia's hideout. He tells them that he knows nothing of the Agency's situation, save for Dazai who was captured by the Hunting Dogs and is brought under the jurisdiction of the Department of Security, possibly to be sent somewhere unfortunate.[28] For their escape, Mori proposes to have them split up into hiding, but Yosano spites his idea and thinks that he merely wishes to get her. Ryūrō Hirotsu arrives with a radio, from which Fitzgerald greets them and has sent Atsushi to their hideout, much to Kenji's and Tanizaki's relief. However, Mori thinks of Fitzgerald's plot as a trap.

Later, Kenji and Tanizaki find Yosano leaving the hideout, thinking that she is planning on proceeding with Fitzgerald's plot despite its potential of being a trap. To enlighten them, Yosano narrates her and Mori's past and how she was eventually recruited by Ranpo to the Agency after the Great War, which ultimately dissolved the alliance between Fukuzawa and Mori.[29]

Kenji stabbed by a Hunting Dog sword

Kenji stabbed by a Hunting Dog's sword.

As they reach the location for the deal, Kenji and the others spot the Black Lizard commanders arguing; Tachihara prefers striking down the Agency for looking down on Mori, but Hirotsu reminds him that mafiosi must simply carry out the boss' order to protect the Agency members. Later, Kenji spots the ambulance arriving, but as soon as he opens the doors, an explosion is triggered.[30] The military police and a hooded figure (whom they assume to be a Hunting Dog) surround them, in which Kenji gets stabbed by the Hunting Dog's sword. Hirotsu blasts away the sword on Kenji and instructs the others escape.

Rethinking their strategy as the mafia defenses collapse, Yosano urges Kenji and Tanizaki that they escape individually. Though they initially think they must not separate, Yosano advises them that her plan might yield to at least two Agency members' survival. In the end, Kenji and Tanizaki agree to her plan and go through Mori's prepared escape routes, holding on to their promise to give their best in reviving the Agency.[31] It soon turns out that Tanizaki and Kenji are led to a deserted village to hide out in as arranged by the Mafia. Sometime after the vampire outbreak that begins spreading in the Mafia, Mori himself visits Tanizaki and Kenji to have them regroup with the rest of the rescued Agency members to have them strategize how to combat the Decay of the Angel' scheme.

Vampire Infection Outbreak Arc[]

In a novel space of the Agency office recreated by Poe at Ranpo's behest, Kenji and Tanizaki convene with the others and particularly hide under a table to surprise Atsushi and Kyōka, though Kunikida suggests against it, lest they get caught in an accident. As soon as the latter two arrive, Kyōka senses intruders among the Agency and has Demon Snow stab the table, revealing Kenji's and Tanizaki's presence beneath it; soon after, they explain where they had hidden and that Mori fetched them back to regroup with the Agency following the vampire infection outbreak.

Fukuzawa initiates the meeting, and Ranpo briefs them how 16 armies have fallen due to Bram Stoker's ability, driving the remaining nations to panic and disorder. He informs them that the enemy aims not to ultimately stir the world into chaos but to acquire the mind-controlling ability weapon "One Order", which Ranpo adds he can use on the Humankind Army throughout the world. Ranpo deduces that the Decay aims for world domination, so he prepares the Agency to stop Fukuchi from acquiring One Order within 20 hours and readies to tell his strategy,[32] which is to steal and destroy One Order in a fake passenger plane before it can be given to Fukuchi.[33]

Kenji attacks the airport vampires

Kenji attacks the airport vampires.

Eventually, Ranpo deduces a change in the circumstances within the airport and sends in Kenji and Atsushi to locate the fleeing Aya Koda and Bram at once before Fukuchi and his allies can get to them. Kenji ends up rescuing the two and defeats a horde of airport vampires[34] before getting approached by Tetchō. Remembering his encounter with the Hunting Dog, Kenji urges Aya and Bram to escape, unsure if he can defeat his previous adversary.

Kenji hurls Tetcho

Kenji hurls Tetchō using his sword.

Tetchō asks Kenji where they have taken Jōno, but Kenji expresses his confusion and instead suggests to look for him together. Tetchō happily accepts, but it soon dawns upon him that Jōno was taken by a vampire, connecting his disappearance to the Agency's involvement. Kenji presses on with his confusion, but Tetchō immediately strikes him with his elongated sword. Kenji manages to catch his blade and flings it, together with Tetchō, in the air, forcing the latter to unhand his sword. The two then engage in a physical standoff; Tetchō commends the Agency's strength ability, but he declares himself as a Hunting Dog and gets the upper hand, blasting Kenji off the wall.[35]

Kenji spares Tetcho's life

Kenji spares Tetchō's life.

Kenji gets overwhelmed by Tetchō, beaten up by successive blows. As Tetchō gives him a final chance to tell him where Jōno is, Kenji hears Tetchō communicate with Teruko Ōkura that they are to catch and torture Atsushi for intel. Triggered by Tetchō's musing that he won't be able to save his friend anymore, Kenji grows menacing and kicks Tetchō off the wall.[36]

Repeatedly declaring that he must help, Kenji turns the battle into his favor, eventually gaining the upper hand until Tetchō asks him to finish him off for his failure in his Hunting Dog duties. However, Kenji helps him out and offers a helping hand, sparing Tetchō's life and suggesting to look for his missing subordinate together. Nonetheless, the two end up laying on the floor exhausted; they introduce themselves to each other and eventually doze off.[2]
