Introduction |
He was the unnamed secretary (秘書, hisho?) of S&K Corporation's president.
Appearance[]
The secretary was a sickly-looking man who wore a black coat and a crimson necktie.[1] In the anime, he had taupe hair swept outwards and wore a pair of rectangular glasses. He dressed in a white button-down shirt accessorized with a crimson necktie tucked beneath a dark waistcoat, a pair of gray slacks, and a light gray overcoat.[2]
In the stage play adaptation, he wore a pair of red-framed glasses and donned a gray overcoat which he kept buttoned.[3]
Personality[]
He was quite a capable secretary as apparently described by S&K Corporation's president, and he claimed to be the only one in the company who knew of a certain technique of organizing documents. Nonetheless, he seemed to have a level of ambitiousness, particularly having wanted to become something more than a secretary to the president.
In this regard, he was cunning to a fault by managing to kill her and had evidence and forgeries planned in the aftermath. Equipped with his knowledge as a former public prosecutor, he was willing to resort to any means to achieve an objective like evading arrest, including capturing and almost successfully framing a hired assassin. Hence, he was prone to panic when his crafted plans were eventually exposed.
Skills[]
- Intelligence: As a former prosecutor, the secretary was knowledgeable about crime and the specifics in a crime scene, which allowed him to prepare his resources and plans ahead of time to evade getting arrested for his own crime. He was also calculating enough to consider hiring a high-level assassin to frame, knowing that they would not easily sell out their client, the secretary himself, upon capture.
- Clerical Aptitude: He was considered a capable and talented secretary in the company, which particularly gained the president's trust in his skills.
Background[]
As deduced by Ranpo Edogawa, he was apparently a public prosecutor or the like in the past, after which he got plucked out by the president to work in S&K Corporation.
Untold Origins Arc[]
Throughout the years, the secretary desired to be more than a secretary to the president, but she only viewed him as such. In culmination, he apparently planned her assassination and ultimately pushed her out her office window, leading to her death.
In the process, he also hired young assassin Sakunosuke Oda to frame using his collected fingerprints and having him restrained in the process. To deter anyone from coming in, he sprawled out various documents on the floor of the president's office under the pretense of checking for possible stolen documents during the crime. He also hid the device to collect Oda's fingerprints in his overcoat and subsequently contacted bodyguard Yukichi Fukuzawa, who was supposed to guard the president before her death, to meet him at the office.
During the investigation, the secretary met Fukuzawa, staunchly urging him not to interfere with the documents he had laid out on the floor due to its utmost importance, and allowed him access to the assassin caught next door. He then requested the bodyguard to accompany him in bringing the assassin to the police. Not long after, an adolescent Ranpo arrives at the office and, initially embroiled in a ruse with the secretary, asks for his certification document as an interview candidate for the company. Ranpo opens the office window to look for the document, taking advantage of its weight against the wind, much to the secretary's chagrin.
Eventually, as the secretary turns livid at the boy's behavior, Ranpo nonchalantly names the secretary as the president's killer, much to his protests. Despite his objections, Ranpo continuously deduced the evidence behind the secretary's crime that proved his guilt, raising Fukuzawa's suspicion. Ultimately, as the secretary decided to confess his motivation for the murder in defeat, Oda broke out of his restraints, skirmished with Fukuzawa, and shot the secretary twice out of revenge, killing him instantly.[1]
