The second battle of Sakunosuke Oda vs. André Gide is fought by Port Mafia member Sakunosuke Oda against Mimic commander André Gide and various of his subordinates. It happened in Mimic's headquarters upon Gide's invitation for Oda.
Prologue[]
Following Gide's warning for Oda after their first encounter, Mimic acquires knowledge on where the orphans whom Oda are looking after are located and abducts them. At some point, they also raid Freedom Restaurant and kill its owner. Oda manages to know about the orphans' abduction and desperately attempt to chase down the bus containing them along the road, only for the Mimic soldiers inside to trigger an explosion that kills themselves and the children inside, leaving Oda aghast and greatly horrified.
Oda later heads to Freedom Restaurant where he sees the deceased owner. He also finds a map with an inscription of Ghost Graveyard left by Mimic to direct him to their base, after which he arms himself with his arsenal of weapons.
Along the way, he runs into Osamu Dazai, who informs him of a secret meeting mediated by Ango Sakaguchi between Mori and Santōka Taneda, the chief of the Special Division for Unusual Powers. He tries to dissuade him from exacting revenge on Gide, imploring him to find something to rely on and telling Oda why he joined the Mafia in hopes of finding a reason to live. However, Oda refuses to heed his appeal and continues on his way. He soon bumps into a young detective, who deduces that he will die if he proceeds to his destination. Oda acknowledges his warning and nonetheless heads to Mimic's base.
Battle[]
As he arrives at his destination, Oda shoots three onlooking Mimic soldiers guarding a Western-style mansion. Soon after, the soldiers inside fire at Oda's direction outside, while he waits for a few seconds of their reloading to counterattack, tossing a grenade inside the manor. Afterwards, Oda shoots the remaining soldiers, killing six guards inside.
More Mimic soldiers arrive, but Oda opts to charge at them and successfully fends them off. As he proceeds, Oda notices a remote directional landmine ahead him, but he fails to evade another landmine behind him, whose explosion causes him to sustain some injuries. With his ability's help, Oda exchanges gunfire with more soldiers. During the shoot-out, he engages Mimic's deputy commander in a close combat, who thanks him for fulfilling their vision and directs him to Gide, after which Oda kills him.
Oda arrives at the mansion's ballroom, where Gide awaits him. He apologizes for killing the orphans, albeit believing it triggered Oda to come. As Gide draws his guns, they begin their gunfight with the help of their predictive abilities, though Oda manages to injure Gide by outsmarting him. The gunfight resumes until they are close enough for hand-to-hand combat and empty their magazines.
In the ensuing battle, Mimic soldiers and armed Mafia members simultaneously arrive at the ballroom to aid their respective colleagues, but Oda and Gide shoot each other's allies to prevent intruders from intervening their battle. They also converse with each other, but their predictive abilities prevent them from actually conversing, since one's vision allows the other to know their responses.
After killing both sides, enveloped in a singularity, Oda narrates how an author once inspired him to become a novelist after urging him to write the ending to his novel, which the man deemed was full of flaws; this encounter then made him vow never to kill again. Gide recounts how he and his men were considered as war heroes during the war, until their country struck a peace treaty while fighting for their homeland, which turned their activities as war crimes and acts of betrayal. Since then, Gide and his men wandered as illegal mercenaries searching for their rightful deaths.
Afterwards, Oda and Gide end up shooting each other, both expecting and anticipating such moment. The singularity vanishes, and the two collapse backwards at the same time with their sustained chest wounds.
Aftermath[]
Dazai arrives at the mansion against Mori's orders and spots Oda and a deceased Gide on the floor. He berates Oda for fighting Gide, but he clutches Dazai's ears and tells him that he will never find a reason to live regardless whether he puts himself in a world of bloodshed and violence, remarking that Dazai must have known such notion himself. As his final words, Oda urges Dazai to be on the side that saves people and to be a good person. Dazai also lights Oda his final cigarette, shortly before he succumbs to his death.[1]
Light Novel and Anime Differences[]
The anime does not depict Oda smoking on the way to Mimic's base and in his final moments. Moreover, unlike in the light novel where he sustains injuries against Mimic soldiers, Oda fends them off with relative ease and faces Gide considerably unscathed in the anime.[2]
