The Ame-no-Gozen, formally the Shintō Ame-no-Gozen ( (しん) (とう) (あめの) () (ぜん), Shintō Ame-no-Gozen?, lit. "Divine Blade: In the Presence of the Rain"), is an ability-driven katana crafted by the gifted swordsmith Akinari Ueda.[1] Notably utilized and owned by Ōchi Fukuchi, it is also dubbed the "space–time sword" (時空剣, jikū-ken?) for its ability of allowing its wielder to cut through space and time.[2]

After Bram Stoker transfigured into Fyodor Dostoevsky, the blade is in the resurrected Conjurer's possession and merged with both Fukuchi and the Holy Sword Soluz Levni.[3]

Background[]

Ame-no-Gozen's creation.

At least 1,500 years ago, the gifted swordsmith Akinari Ueda forged the katana and its twin sword, the life force-manipulating Tsuki-no-Gozen, to be solely used as ceremonial swords in Shinto rituals. To avoid losing the swords' power when Ueda and their ability perish in death and to provide an enduring source of power, statesmen from all over the world sealed Ueda in the Cage of Infinite Perpetuity.[1]

While the Tsuki-no-Gozen decayed and was broken in a political dispute, the Ame-no-Gozen survived throughout the centuries. At some point, Fukuchi obtained the sword and used it in combat, helping him garner countless victories throughout history against various sorts of opponents, which eventually led to his renowned military career as the legendary samurai war hero.[2][4][5]

Description[]

Amenogozen (text)

The Ame-no-Gozen is a blue-bladed katana with a tsuka-ito wrapped around its handle and a radial-patterned tsuba, which Atsushi Nakajima described as "beautiful." Fukuchi can also summon it out of thin air whenever necessary. As with other swords, the Ame-no-Gozen is made of metal.[2][6]

Befitting its nickname as the space–time sword, the Ame-no-Gozen can slice through space it is not actually touching within about a dozen centimeters of the blade, but Fukuchi enhances its reach with his ability Mirror Lion, allowing him to penetrate further than its usual range.[2] The sword can also cut through time, such as cutting through the past within a timeframe of about a dozen seconds. This allows Fukuchi to send messages to the past and "foresee" the future, which allows him to anticipate surprise attacks and enables him to overwrite defeat in battle.[4]

Despite its exceptional ability, using the Ame-no-Gozen has limitations, one of which is its space–time range limit, already limited without Fukuchi's ability. For instance, if a target is too distant from its cutting limit, such as a submarine that has dived too far from a ship deck, Fukuchi is unable to cut through the space in between him and his target.[7] Moreover, with the Ame-no-Gozen's metal composition, its natural weakness is Michizō Tachihara's metal manipulation ability, which allows Tachihara to briefly but effortlessly rid Fukuchi of his sword and even prevent the Ame-no-Gozen from piercing through neither space nor time once controlled.[6]

Trivia[]

  • The name Ame-no-Gozen contains the kanji for "rain" (雨, ame?). With its twin blade Tsuki-no-Gozen, which contains the kanji for "moon" (月, tsuki?), they jointly reference Ueda's ability, Tales of Moonlight and Rain.
  • The suffix gozen specifically refers to the state of standing before a great or highly-ranked figure or god. In later centuries, it came to be used as a respectful title for such figures, especially for women.
